The Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a renaissance hound that was bred for both sight and scent abilities.  Originating from Rhodesia (current day Zimbabwe), the Rhodesian Ridgeback was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1955.   The breed was originally known as The African Lion hound - bred and made famous in its native Africa for strong skills in tracking and baying (but never killing) lions.  The hallmark of the breed, and part of it's namesake, is the ridge - or a stripe of backward-growing hair along the top of his back.

Ridgebacks are moderately sized hounds, needing to be both fast and powerful, hearty and agile.  They are a formidable breed - strong-willed, independent, and calculating thinkers.  They make great family dogs when guided by a firm, fair and consistent approach from puppyhood.

We welcome all interested in the breed to familiarize themselves with the AKC and RRCUS approved breed standard, and the illustrated elaboration
